Civil society groups issued a statement condemning the declaration of emergency martial law.

Some criticized that the president should resign on his own, pointing out that declaring martial law is unconstitutional, and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions predicted an indefinite general strike until President Yoon's resignation.

Following the declaration of martial law, academics and civic groups issued a series of critical statements.

The faculty association of Seoul National University issued a statement of serious concern about the political incident that occurred in the middle of the night, and the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy pointed out that the declaration of emergency martial law is a challenge to democracy and can no longer be called the president of the Republic of Korea.

The legal profession also expressed serious concern.

The Korean Bar Association criticized it as an unconstitutional act that destroys liberal democracy and constitutional order and called for immediate lifting.
The
Lawyers for a Democratic Society group stressed that the president, who abuses his power to drive citizens who criticize him as anti-state forces, should resign himself.

The medical community, which contains the "return of field departure majors within 48 hours" in the decree, emphasized that the resignation medical personnel were not on strike or out of the field, and that they would treat them normally.

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions criticized the Yoon Suk Yeol regime for declaring the end of power on its own in an unconventional and anti-democratic move:
