Brian Thompson, head of the insurance division of United Health Group, the largest health insurance company in the U.S., was killed in a gunman's shooting in the middle of downtown Manhattan early on the 4th local time.

The New York Post and others reported that CEO Thompson was shot by a man covering his face with a black mask near the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan at around 7 a.m. and was taken to a nearby hospital, but died.

The suspect was pacing the street near the hotel before the crime, the newspaper said, citing witnesses.

CEO Thompson was scheduled to attend an annual investor event at the Hilton Hotel at 8 a.m., and the suspect fled on his bicycle shortly after the crime.
