CBS quoted multiple sources as saying Trump sent an invitation to Xi shortly after his presidential victory last month.
However, it is not clear whether President Xi has accepted the invitation, the broadcaster said.
In addition to Xi, Trump's transition team is likely to invite other foreign leaders, with Hungarian Prime Minister Orban Viktor considering whether to attend, CBS reported.
However, records from the State Department since 1874 show that no other country's national leader has attended the inauguration of the U.S. president.
During the presidential campaign, Trump praised President Xi as a "good friend," but he has foreshadowed a hard-line policy toward China in trade and security issues.
