The National Statistical Office has developed and announced income movement data for 11 million people by combining several data, including income data from the National Tax Service.

According to the contents, 17.6% of the people saw their income increase in the year as of 2022, less than 2 in 10.

65% of the income was the same as the previous year, and 17% of the income was backward.

In addition, 86% of high-income earners, who were in the top 20% of income, maintained their income quintile without falling, and 69% of the bottom 20% had no change in income. It means that nearly 9 out of 10 people in the high income class

, and 7 out of 10 people in the poor had no income transfer for the second year.

Expanding the comparison period from 2017 to 2022 to six years, the top 20% of income remained in high income status with 63% while the bottom 20% did not escape poverty with 31%.It can be interpreted that the income polarization of

is likely to become entrenched.

[Choi Baul / Director of Economic and Social Statistics Research at Statistics Korea: Seven people in the row are out of the bottom 20% (income) for the past six years, and three out of ten remain. In particular, it was found that men rather than women and young people more than the elderly moved out of the first quintile of income faster.Mobility by income quintile

has also declined for the second year, which is interpreted as a decrease in social mobility.

In the case of the elderly, four out of ten people remained in the first decile of income for the second year, making it difficult for the poor elderly to escape poverty.
