U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed his condolences for the victims, calling the car crash at a German Christmas market, which left five people dead and more than 200 injured.

"The United States will always stand with its allies against violent terrorism," Biden said in a statement.

"No community or family should go through such a mean and dark event," he said, "even more so just days before Christmas, a period of joy and peace."

Five people were killed and more than 200 injured, including more than 40 seriously injured, after a BMW SUV drove into the crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany.

The suspect, 50-year-old Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmosen, who hails from Saudi Arabia, is believed to have been anti-Muslim as he works to help persecuted women in Saudi Arabia in their exile.
