Peru's state-run oil company Petroperu said it had confirmed a spill of crude oil in waters 10 kilometers near the Tallara refinery on the morning of the 21st local time and began cleaning it up.
But local residents protested hours after the accident, saying the company had done nothing, local media reported.
Ricardo Vankayan, the mayor of the affected city of Robitos, said he was angry at the oil spill and urged companies responsible to take immediate action.
