Over 20 per cent over 65...Korea's entry into 'super-aged society'

South Korea has entered a "super-aged society" with more than 20% of the population aged 65 or older.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced that as of yesterday (23rd), there were 14,244,550 residents aged 65 or older, accounting for 20% of the total registered population.

According to the UN standard, over 7% of the population aged 65 or older is classified as an 'aging society', over 14% as an 'aging society', and over 20% as a 'super-aged society'.

The number of people aged 65 or older in Korea's resident registration population rose steadily to 4.94 million in 2008, exceeding 10% of the total, exceeding 15% in 2019, and more than doubled in 16 years, exceeding 10 million yesterday.

The gender share of the population aged 65 or older is 17.83% male and 22.15% female, 17.7% of the population in the metropolitan area and 22.38% in the non-metropolitan area.

Jeollanam-do had the highest proportion of the population aged 65 or older, exceeding 27%, and Sejong had the lowest with 11.57%.
