The won-dollar exchange rate once exceeded 1,480 won due to growing political instability, with the ruling and opposition parties intensifying over the passage of acting President Han Deok-soo's impeachment bill to the National Assembly.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate rose sharply after reaching 1,460 won shortly after opening, reaching 1,480 won at one point in the morning.

This is the first such surge in exchange rates in 15 years and 10 months since March 2009 during the global financial crisis.

As the exchange rate soared, our stock market also fell for the second day.

The Kospi closed 1.02 percent lower at 2,404.77 and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ index closed 1.43 percent lower at 665.97.

The KOSPI fell below the 2,400-point mark during the day.

In both securities and KOSDAQ markets, foreigners and institutions made net selling and individuals made net buying.
