The three major stock indexes fell to around 1% as profitability selling continued ahead of the year-end settlement on the New York Stock Exchange.

By the close of the day on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones 30 Industrial Average closed at 42,573.73, down 418.48 points, or 0.97% from the previous session.

The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 closed at 5,906.94, down 63.90 points, or 1.07%, from the previous session, and the Nasdaq Composite closed at 19,486.79, down 235.25 points, or 1.19%.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the last five trading days of the year and the first two trading days of the new year are usually referred to as the "Santa Rally" period when stocks are strong.

But New York stocks have been weak this year, following a mixed trend after the U.S. Federal Reserve hinted at slowing rate cuts.
