The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Republican Party is pushing to deal with President-elect Donald Trump's key pledges of tax cuts and strengthening borders in a single bill.

The newspaper said House Speaker Mike Johnson explained at a Republican strategy meeting last week that Trump wanted one big, beautiful bill.

Originally, a strategy to deal with border legislation first was discussed within the Republican Party, but concerns were raised that tax cuts could not be passed if they were treated as separate bills, leading to a consensus to deal with them all at once in Trump's early term.

CNN explained that Trump's team's recent handling of the interim budget bill and voting to select the speaker of the House of Representatives, which expressed differences within the party, have led Republicans to recognize that they have very little room to deal with the two bills.

Republicans will reportedly use the budget adjustment process to avoid a Democratic filibuster, whether they tie the border and tax cut bill together or deal with it separately.

The Wall Street Journal observed that a single bill tying borders and tax cuts is an attempt to unite several factions within the Republican Party, which could require delicate negotiations that take months.
