A powerful snow storm with a cold wave has hit a wide range of areas from the central to eastern United States, causing a series of damage.

U.S. weather officials expect maximum snowfall to reach 35 centimeters in Kansas and Missouri amid the first heavy snowfall in 10 years in the central and eastern regions.

Parts of Kentucky received 19.5 cm of heavy snow, the highest since 1910.

Heavy snow since the weekend has isolated at least 600 drivers in Missouri, and hundreds of traffic accidents have also been reported in Virginia, Indiana and Kansas.

In addition, nearly 2,200 flights were canceled and 25,000 flights were delayed.

There are also a series of large-scale school closures.

As the damage continued, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois and Virginia declared a state of emergency and advised residents to refrain from going out.

Following heavy snow, a strong cold wave is expected to cover the eastern region from today local time.

Meteorological authorities urged preparations that temperatures could be as low as 14 degrees below normal in about two-thirds of the eastern part of the country.

There is also the possibility of a cold wave below minus 18 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Meteorologists explained that extreme cold is expected as the Arctic vortex, which surrounds the coldness of the Arctic, descends to low latitudes.
