Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has been threatened with his premiership due to a cabinet distrust by an opposition coalition, is set to resign as leader of the ruling Liberal Party sometime this week, Canada's leading media reported.

The daily "Globe and Mail" quoted three sources as saying on the 5th local time that Trudeau is set to announce his resignation as soon as the 6th.

According to sources, Trudeau is weighing announcing his resignation before the Liberal Party executive meeting on August 8 to avoid being pushed out by demands from his own party members.

However, the political turmoil is expected to continue after that.

The Globe and Mail said it was unclear whether Trudeau would step down as prime minister immediately after stepping down as leader or remain prime minister until the next leader is elected.

Trudeau's side is seeking to retain his premiership, but many Liberal lawmakers say it would be better to elect an interim leader.

Reuters predicted that calls for an early general election may erupt as political leadership is needed to respond to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's notice of high tariffs, which will take office in Canada on the 20th.

Prime Minister Trudeau was on the verge of resignation on the 20th of last month when Jugmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's New Democratic Party (NDP), predicted a proposal of no-confidence in the government.

This is because if the New Democratic Party, which has formed a policy coalition, leaves the ruling Liberal Party without securing a majority of seats, no confidence will be avoided.

The center-left Liberal Party won the 2021 general election but failed to secure a single majority, and since the following year, it has maintained its position in parliament through a coalition with the progressive New Democratic Party.

The New Democratic Party withdrew its policy coalition last year, expressing dissatisfaction with the Liberal Party's failure to deal with inflation, but did not favor the main opposition Conservative Party in the September-October confidence vote. As a result, Prime Minister Trudeau narrowly succeeded in maintaining power.

However, Trudeau's approval rating continued to fall as a result of widespread awareness that he was not adequately coping with high prices and the emergence of a second Trump administration.

Polls over the past year have shown the Conservatives an edge over the Liberals by more than double digits. A poll conducted late last month found that Trudeau's approval rating would be only 13 percent if he led the Liberal Party.

In the meantime, the New Democratic Party said it would officially submit a no-confidence motion in the government at the next session, which begins on January 27 this year.

On top of that, Prime Minister Trudeau was beleaguered when Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Frland resigned last month after clashing over the Trump administration's tariff response issues.

Trudeau has remained silent on calls for his resignation that followed Frland's resignation.
