On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate for February delivery rose $0.69, or 0.94% to settle at $74.25 a barrel.
By closing, it was the highest since October 11 last year, up $2.53, or 3.53%, from the start of the year.
Brent crude oil for March delivery, which is subject to international market comparisons, ended at $77.05, up $0.75, or 0.98% from the previous session at $76.30.
The sharp rise in New York oil prices is attributed to increased demand for heating fuel in the U.S. due to the cold wave that hit the U.S., but experts believe the trend will not continue for a long time.
