U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering declaring a "national economic emergency" to justify imposing "universal tariffs," CNN reported, citing four anonymous sources.

CNN reported that Trump is considering introducing a new tariff program by declaring an economic emergency based on the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA) enacted in 1977.

The International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA) gives the president broad control of economic activities, including trade with foreign countries, in the event of a national emergency that poses a threat to U.S. security, diplomacy and the economy.

A source said the law was favored by Trump, given that it empowers them without strict requirements for imposing tariffs for security reasons.

Another source acknowledged that active discussions were underway on declaring a national economic emergency but said it was "looking at all measures on the table."

CNN, however, pointed out that even if Trump declares a national emergency to introduce universal tariffs, it is unclear on what basis he will use as the basis for the emergency.

During the presidential election, Trump pledged to impose a 10% to 20% universal tariff on all imports into the United States.

However, there are also many voices of concern that universal tariff policies can have a significant impact on the U.S. economy and consumers, and even shake up the global trade order.
