Rep. Andy Kim, who became a member of the U.S. Senate with only a hundred members, held a press conference with media in the Indo-Pacific region.
Asked about the current situation in Korea, Kim said he was concerned about President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law, but that he soon confirmed his democratic resilience.
However, I was worried about the violence, describing what is happening as a confrontation.
[Andy Kim / U.S. Senator] The current standoff is very concerning. If violence or something like that happens, it will make the situation in Korea more unstable.]
This is an urgent time for political stability, he said, noting that politicians should not take advantage of the situation for their own ambitions.
[Andy Kim / U.S. Senator] This is a really important time for stability. This is not the time for a particular person to take advantage of the situation for their political ambitions.
As for Trump, who will take office soon, he said he was not optimistic about what to do with South Korea.
In particular, he advised that the U.S. should confirm that the U.S. is not giving charity if it demands an increase in defense costs for U.S. troops in Korea.
[Andy Kim / U.S. Senator: The U.S. military in South Korea also helps to deter China in the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. is benefiting from its partnership with South Korea.]
Rep. Kim stressed that he wants to serve as a bridge between South Korea and the U.S. and make sure that the U.S. will be around South Korea at any time.
Referring to Trump's statement that he would not rule out the use of military force in the Greenland and Panama Canal, Kim said he would strongly confront Asian countries, including South Korea, if he uses coercive measures.
