Brazil's Lula celebrates 2nd anniversary of right-wing riots "milestones to defend democracy"

Brazilian President Lula, who recently underwent brain hemorrhage surgery, attended an event held at the presidential palace in Brasilia, the capital, on the 8th local time to mark the second anniversary of the January 8 right-wing riot, stressing that "Today is like a milestone in protecting Brazil's democracy," and that "democracy is alive, contrary to what coup plotters planned."

The Brazilian government also held an event to restore artifacts damaged during the riot and return them to their place.

The right-wing insurrection in the capital Brasilia on January 8, 2023, sparked a riot in which thousands of Bolsonaro's supporters stormed the presidential palace, the Capitol and the Supreme Court building, and are suspected of being encouraged by Bolsonaro and his aides.

Bolsonaro, in particular, is also under investigation for plotting a coup to prevent then-President-elect Lula from taking office ahead of his retirement after losing the 2022 presidential election.

Brazil's federal police previously filed a report in November last year asking 37 people to be indicted on charges of coups and criminal organization.

Former President Bolsonaro is among those considered for the indictment.
