Chad's government said 24 gunmen stormed the office of President N'Djamena in the evening of the 8th local time, killing 18 people and wounding six others.
It added that one security guard in the president's office was killed and three others were injured during the battle.
Government spokesman and Foreign Minister Abdelaman Kulamala said in a video on social media that the situation was completely under control and that attempts to destabilise had been suppressed.
President Mahamat Idris Debbie is said to have been inside the president's office during the shootout.
The shootout comes just hours after a meeting between Wang Yi, the Chinese Communist Party's foreign minister, and Chad's president, who is on a four-nation tour of Africa, including Chad.
