The 4th Korea-U.S. Nuclear Consultation Group, NCG Conference, which was postponed in the aftermath of the December 3 emergency martial law incident, was held in Washington, DC, USA.

A government official said the fourth round of the South Korea-U.S. NCG meeting was held in the presence of senior representatives from both sides, Cho Chang-rae, head of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Office, and acting U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Kara Abercrombie.

The NCG, agreed during President Yoon Suk Yeol's state visit to the U.S. in April 2023, is a consultative body between South Korea and the U.S. to strengthen the implementation of "extended deterrence," which means the provision of U.S. nuclear umbrellas to South Korea.

The NCG was officially launched in July last year through the first meeting in Seoul, and the fourth meeting was scheduled last month and postponed due to the emergency martial law crisis, which is expected to be the last meeting during the Biden administration's term.

High-level diplomatic and security communication between South Korea and the U.S. was temporarily disrupted, including the postponement of U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's visit to Korea at the time.

Since President Yoon was impeached last month and the acting presidential system was in operation, the South Korea-U.S. foreign ministers' meeting took place on the 6th as the two countries agreed to resume major diplomatic and security schedules between South Korea and the U.S.
