The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says it will extend TPS, or temporary protective status, for 1 million illegal aliens from those countries by 18 months from expiration.
The move was announced in a surprise move 10 days before President-elect Donald Trump's return to power, which aims to reduce TPS and temporary status policies, and conduct the largest deportation operation in U.S. history for illegal immigrants.
The TPS was established in 1990 by the U.S. Congress to prevent deportations to countries suffering from natural disasters or in civil war, which, if recognized, can exempt them from deportation for up to 18 months at a time and obtain work permits.
The move benefits 600,000 Venezuelan nationals with TPS, 230,000 El Salvador, 100,000 Ukraine and 2,000 Sudan, but expels non-citizens who fail to prove grounds for their stay in the United States.
