Sen. Shaheen, who led Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the 119th U.S. Congress that launched this year, expressed support for the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

"South Korea is a trusted partner and essential ally of the United States in the Indo-Pacific," Shaheen, the new Democratic secretary on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement.

"It is essential that we keep an eye on the political situation in Seoul and join the Korean people in keeping their promises of democracy and rule of law at a critical time for the United States," he said.

"As the Democratic secretary of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, we recognize the ironclad alliance with South Korea and are committed to advancing policies that include the Biden administration's efforts to strengthen cooperation between the U.S. and South Korea," he said.

Earlier in March 2024, Congressman Shaheen visited South Korea as a delegation to the House and Senate, reaffirming the U.S. commitment to curbing expansion and emphasizing the importance of cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.
