Civilian damage continues to rise as Russia and Ukraine continue airstrikes against each other.

Both sides are hoping for a meeting with U.S. President-elect Trump, but the expectations of the U.S. are so different that the possibility of a three-way meeting seems slim for now.

Correspondent Jo Su-hyun of London reports.

A red flame rises above an apartment complex in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian Air Force shot down dozens of Russian drones, which failed to stop them from falling into private homes.

One person was injured and buildings damaged by Russian drone strikes in various parts of Chernihiv in the north.

On the same day, Russian authorities claimed that Ukraine attacked a Russian-occupied supermarket in Donetsk with U.S.-made Hymas missiles.

One civilian was killed and six others were injured.

As fighting intensified on major fronts such as Kursk, where North Korean troops were deployed, some Ukrainian military officials claimed that North Korean soldiers were being used as human landmine detectors.

Both sides are looking forward to a meeting with U.S. President-elect Trump, who will take office on the 20th, with all-out efforts to secure territory for favorable negotiations.

The Kremlin has stressed that Putin can hold talks with Trump without any preconditions.

Ukraine's foreign ministry also said it was preparing for a top-level meeting with the U.S. shortly after Trump's inauguration.

However, as the U.S. maintains its position that it will talk to Russia only when it guarantees security first, the possibility of a three-way meeting seems small at the moment.

As Russia and Ukraine each expressed their desire to meet with Trump early, the fate of the nearly three-year-old war seems to depend on Trump.
