On the 11th local time, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the presidential palace in Bogor, a satellite city in southern Jakarta.
Speaking at the meeting, Ishiba said both countries have something in common in that they are island nations and have an economic structure that relies on trade, adding that "we need to pay attention to the balance of foreign policy."President
Prabowo also said Japan is an important partner and welcomed Japan's cooperation in fostering its natural resource industry.
At a joint press conference that followed, Prime Minister Ishiba said, "We have agreed to establish working-level defense consultations on maritime security," adding, "As a first aid, we have decided to provide high-speed patrol ships to Indonesia."
Earlier, at the defense ministers' meeting, the two countries discussed ways to export Japanese frigates to Indonesia by jointly developing frigates.
This is the first time Prime Minister Ishiba, who took office in October last year, has visited a foreign country for bilateral diplomatic purposes.
