U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is making the world nervous as he reveals his desire to dominate Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal.

In particular, Greenland has been expressing its intention to purchase from the first term of power,

There's a hidden reason for this: climate change.

Reporter Kwon Young-hee reports.

Greenland, in the Arctic Ocean, is 21 times the size of Korea and is home to 54,000 people.

It is a Danish territory with an autonomous government, and Denmark is in charge of defense and foreign policy.

This frozen island is in a state of upheaval due to climate change caused by global warming.

[Ronnie Thompson / Senior Researcher at Bird's Polar Research Center: Mountain ice is at risk and relevant records will be lost. Now you can see the melting of the Greenland edge glaciers.

Most of the area was covered with glaciers up to 4km thick, but it melted six times faster than in the 1980s, making it easier to develop mineral resources.

44% of the world's rare earth reserves are here, and 65 billion tons of crude oil and natural gas are also buried.

The longer ships can sail, the more important the role of sea routes has become.

The icy sea route opens up, enabling a route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, replacing the Suez Canal.

That's why businessman-turned-Trump is eyeing Greenland.

[Mette Frederiksen/Denmark Prime Minister: We must bear in mind that there is a growing interest in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. This is because tensions that can be seen in other regions are starting to come to the Arctic region as well.]

The European Union set up an office in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, in 2021 to manage raw materials.

Russia seeks to seize control of the Arctic based on an air base on the Franz Josef Islands in the Arctic Ocean.

Recently, China is also operating an icebreaker fleet in the Arctic region based on its shipbuilding capabilities.

The Arctic environmental changes brought about by climate change are accelerating the scramble for a new world.
