Hundreds of climate activists against fossil fuels have been arrested in the Netherlands after occupying highways and demonstrating.

Activists from the UK-based climate activist group Extinction Resistance entered the highway to protest, criticizing subsidies and tax breaks for the fossil fuel industry.Dutch police arrested more than 700 activists sitting on the road shooting water cannons as the
highway was closed for a long time.

Most of the arrested activists were later reportedly released.

People participating in the protest called for the fight against climate change, citing large wildfires in California in the United States.
