The Coast Guard has launched a full-fledged investigation into the recent death of a diver in his 20s at the HD Hyundai Mipo Ulsan Shipyard.

Ulsan Coast Guard announced today (13th) that it is investigating four people, including HD Hyundai Mipo CEO Kim Hyung-kwan and subcontractor CEO, on charges of professional negligence.

They are suspected of not fulfilling their duty of care in connection with the diving work of Kim Ki-bum, a diver from a subcontractor who died after being deployed for ship inspection at the HD Hyundai Mipo Ulsan Shipyard on the 30th of last month.

The Coast Guard has secured a statement that Kim's obligations were not observed at the time of diving, and is investigating the reason and whether safety measures were taken.

In addition, the Coast Guard is expected to confirm the allegation that the representative of the subcontractor urged the field staff to make false statements.

Kim failed to get out of the water while diving twice last month for ship inspection at the shipyard and was lifted into cardiac arrest about four hours after entering the water.
