The Kremlin said in a statement that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Iranian President Masud Pejeshikyan in Russia on the 17th.
He then explained that the two leaders would sign a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and Iran and make a statement after the talks.
During the meeting, the two leaders will discuss ways to expand cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade and investment, transportation and logistics, the Kremlin added.
The Russian daily Kommersant predicted that the treaty would not only raise the level of bilateral relations but also provide a new impetus for relations with the West, including the United States.
"One of the priorities of the treaty is to cooperate with Russia in security and defense," an Iranian diplomatic source told the newspaper.
Kommersant said it was very symbolic for the leaders of Russia and Iran, who are at odds with the West, to sign the treaty at the summit ahead of the launch of Trump's second regime on the 20th.
This is an important step toward closer ties between the two countries as Trump is about to take office, which does not rule out the possibility of war with Iran or attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
In 2018, during his first term in office, Trump unilaterally broke the Iran nuclear agreement and began imposing strong sanctions, and is determined to respond strongly to Iran in the future.
Russia has maintained friendly relations with Iran, which is also subject to Western sanctions, despite intense Western sanctions since the Ukraine war.
