Nawaf Salam, director of the International Court of Justice, ICJ, has been appointed as Lebanon's new prime minister.

According to Reuters and other sources, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun named Salam as prime minister on the 13th local time and ordered the formation of a cabinet.

A congressional consultation chaired by Aoun found that Salam had the support of 68 lawmakers, more than half of the 128 registered members.

As a result, current Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who has served as prime minister with the support of pro-Iranian militant Hezbollah, has been toppled.

Maj. Gen. Salam, a Sunni Muslim, served as Lebanon's ambassador to the United Nations for more than a decade from 2007 and has served as an ICJ judge since 2018.

In February last year, he took the helm of the ICJ and addressed the case of a genocide lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel.

Hezbollah's influence in Lebanon's politics is expected to shrink, with Aoun, a former military chief known as a preferred figure by the United States and Saudi Arabia, and Prime Minister Mikati being pushed out.

Hezbollah's lawmaker strongly protested, saying, "I reached out to elect the president of Aun, but my hand was cut off."

Mr. Mikati has been working with Navi Berry, the chairman of the Shiite-share parliament, during Hezbollah's war with Israel.

Hezbollah believed Prime Minister Mikati would remain in office when it agreed on the election of Aoun's president on the 9th, Reuters said.

Lebanon, which fought a long civil war from 1975 to 1990, agreed to a power-sharing system after the end of the civil war, in which the president was a Maronite Christian, the prime minister was a Sunni Muslim and the parliament speaker was a Muslim Shiite.
