Starting this month, coffee chain Starbucks has decided to open its restrooms to customers who have placed orders at its stores in North America.

The policy of opening stores to visitors who have not ordered has been abolished in seven years.

According to the Wall Street Journal on the 13th local time, Starbucks announced that it will introduce these new regulations from the 27th at its North American stores to improve customer and employee safety.

Accordingly, only customers and companions who pay to order are allowed to use the bathroom and access Wi-Fi.

It also comes with a guide that prohibits bullying, violence, threatening language, outside drinking, smoking or begging in the store.

Free drinking water is also provided only to guests and companions.

Sarah Thrilling, head of Starbucks North America, said, "We need to reset expectations about how our space is used and who is using it."

Starbucks has allowed stores and restrooms to be used regardless of whether they ordered or not since 2018, but there has been a big and small noise surrounding it.

In the same year, a Philadelphia store in the U.S. even boycotted a protest amid racial controversy after two black men were arrested by police after an employee reported them requesting the use of the bathroom before ordering.

The new rules apply to more than 10 million Starbucks stores in North America.

Baristas, in particular, will be able to ask anyone who does not follow this guidance to leave, and if necessary, they can ask law enforcement for help.

Starbucks shares rose 1.4% on the 13th to close at $93.51 per share after these reports emerged.
