Qatari PM Mediates Ceasefire Negotiations Between Israel and Hamas,
has confirmed that the two sides have agreed to a three-phase cease-fire that will stop fighting for six weeks and discuss a permanent ceasefire by exchanging hostages and prisoners.
[Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdulrahman Altani / Prime Minister of Qatar: Qatar, Egypt, and the United States are pleased to announce the success of the agreement between the parties to the conflict in Gaza for the exchange of prisoners and hostages and the joint mediation efforts on the restoration of sustainable peace]
Israel will put the two sides' agreement to a cabinet vote today local time to approve it.
Local media predicted that the ceasefire would take effect around the 19th.
U.S. President-elect Trump hurriedly highlighted his role theory on social media.
He stressed that he would expand peace in the Middle East, saying his victory in the presidential election enabled a ceasefire agreement.
U.S. President Biden also did not give up his achievement at the end of his term, stressing that it was the result of persistent and arduous U.S. diplomacy.
[Joe Biden / U.S. President: (Reporter: "Who's credit for this? President or Trump?") Biden: "You're kidding, right? Thank you."
However, the cease-fire agreement summarizes that the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the buffer zone, the Piladelpi Corridor, will take place gradually for up to 50 days, leaving room for conflict.
In addition, the ceasefire was suspended for a week in November 2023, but fighting resumed as Israel claimed Hamas to violate the agreement.
Therefore, it remains to be seen whether true peace will come to war-torn Gaza in more than 15 months.
