Victor Cha, the South Korean chair of the U.S. Institute for Strategic and International Studies, said on the North Korean site Beyond Division, "President Yoon's arrest is an unprecedented incident and has put South Korean society into uncharted territory."
"Old political crises pose greater risks," they suggested, "and it is time to focus on stabilization to minimize political turmoil and adverse economic effects."
In particular, he pointed out that the South Korean government's optimism about the economy could backfire, saying, "The pressure to get politicians out of the struggle is gone, and the economic situation is more disadvantageous than the previous impeachment."
Referring to the war in Ukraine, the Middle East crisis, China's slowing economic growth, impending U.S. tariffs and semiconductor export controls, Cha and others emphasized that it is absolutely critical to deal with the situation as soon as possible.
