More than half of U.S. voters oppose President-elect Donald Trump's claim of ownership of Greenland.

According to a joint poll between Suffolk University and USA Today reported by US political media The Hill on the 15th local time, 53% of the survey respondents said they were opposed to the ownership of Greenland by the United States.

Of the respondents who identified themselves as progressives, 86% opposed U.S. ownership of Greenland, while 25% of conservatives expressed opposition.

29% of all respondents, including 46% of conservatives, 26% of centrists and 8% of progressives, said they didn't think owning Greenland was a good idea, but it wasn't practically possible.

Only 11% said the next U.S. administration should try to make Greenland's ownership a reality.

Earlier in December last year, when Trump announced the nomination of the new ambassador to Denmark, he said, "For national security and freedom around the world, the United States absolutely believes Greenland's ownership and domination are necessary."

He has repeatedly expressed his intention to buy Greenland since his first term in office, and Trump went one step further and said at a press conference on the 7th that he would not rule out the use of military force to secure control of Greenland.

Greenland, a Danish territory, is the largest island in the world, covering 2.166 million square kilometers, more than nine times the size of the Korean Peninsula.

Trump insists the U.S. should own Greenland because of security threats from the Western alliance by Russia and China.

However, in addition to its strategic importance, the abundant deposits of oil, gas and rare earth minerals in Greenland are also attracting Trump's attention, according to analysts.
