This is about one-third of Canada's imports of U.S. goods ($340 billion) in the 12 months to November last year.
The source added that whether or not to add items depends on how the U.S. does it.
Earlier, the Canadian government imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods such as washing machines and bourbon whisky after the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in 2018, during the first Trump administration.
At the time, the Canadian government used pressure tactics to target factories in areas where U.S. Republican politicians wield influence while selecting items subject to retaliatory tariffs, with imports of those goods at around $16.6 billion.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his intention to step down, was quoted as highlighting a positive message in Ottawa on the 15th when he met with governors to discuss the U.S. strategy for responding to tariffs, saying Canada and the U.S. have an opportunity to build partnerships in the energy sector.
Canada also has key minerals needed for high-tech industries such as semiconductors, he said, adding that the U.S. will "bring them from China if they don't get them from Canada."
Twelve of the 13 governors issued a statement after the meeting saying they would "work together on all measures to respond strongly to U.S. tariffs."
Alberta Governor Daniel Smith, on the other hand, said he could not agree on two initiatives to impose an export tax on energy exports or reduce exports.
More than half of U.S. crude oil imports come from Canada, mostly from Alberta.
Governor Smith, who met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida over the weekend, said at a press conference on the 13th, "We need to prepare for the fact that tariffs are likely to come in on January 20," adding, "We have not seen any signs that Trump is changing his course."
