It is the first time for a Japanese foreign minister to attend the inauguration ceremony of the U.S. president.
Iwaya told a news conference that he wanted to use it as an opportunity to make sure that he built a trust relationship with the next U.S. regime official.
He then explained that he wants to make sure that he communicates with Marco Rubio, the next U.S. Secretary of State nominee, so that the upcoming summit between the U.S. and Japan can be meaningful.
He also added that he wants to inform the next U.S. regime about the regional situation and the role the U.S.-Japan alliance should play.
