Fire whirls up to 1km high...Unable to predict progress direction
The first 'fire whirlwind' warning during the 'Royalton Wildfire' in 2020
An unusual phenomenon called a "fire whirl" or "fire vortex" was seen at the scene of a wildfire in Los Angeles, USA.
It is one of the factors that rapidly spread this wildfire to various regions.
Reporter Hwang Bo-sun reports.

This is a screen shot in Palisades, western LA, on the 10th.
A column of fire rises up and down the hill.
It doesn't stay still in one place and moves quickly.
It's the so-called 'fire whirl'.
It is a phenomenon that sometimes occurs at large forest fire sites, and it is the main culprit of the widespread spread of flames due to high temperatures and fast movement of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius.

{볼}The ball whirl is usually around 50m high, but the upper end can soar 1km into the air.
It is a terrifying firehorse that destroys everywhere it passes by, swirling with flames like a whirlwind.
The direction of progress cannot be predicted, which threatens the lives of firefighters at the fire station.
[James Urban / Assistant Professor of Worcester School of Engineering: When this happens, the fire suddenly changes its direction, which could pose a threat to the initial evolutionary personnel.]
For the first time ever, the U.S. Meteorological Administration issued an alert after the fire whirlwind was also seen at the site of the U.S. Royalton Wildfire in August 2020, following the Canberra wildfire in the Australian capital in January 2003, the Car Carr wildfire in California in July 2018.
