Central American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, which are most affected by immigrant deportation policies, have asked Trump for talks on immigrant deportation policies but have been rejected, officials in those countries said.
A Mexican government official said Trump's side declined a request for an official meeting, saying detailed discussions on immigrant deportation policies would only begin after Trump's inauguration as president.Government officials in both countries said the governments of
Guatemala and Honduras received similar responses from Trump's side.
Considering that the next U.S. president-elect usually exchanges conversations with related countries even before taking office, it is said to be an unusual move.
Eric Olson, a senior fellow for Latin America at the Wilson Center, a U.S. think tank, pointed out that "there are usually informal contacts and discussions by now" and that this is not the usual way to proceed.
Trump's refusal to request dialogue from Central American countries sensitive to immigration issues is also a possible strategy to increase the U.S. government's influence in subsequent negotiations on deportation of immigrants.
Experts pointed out that the incoming Trump administration may want to block talks with the countries involved until they sign a large-scale immigrant deportation executive order, prompting them to rush to respond.
South American countries are struggling to prepare for this at a time when it is unclear how the deportation of immigrants will take place specifically."We have not spoken to the next U.S. administration, so we cannot talk about specific countermeasures," Guatemalan Presidential spokesman
said in reference to Trump's large-scale deportation plan.
