"The deadline for selling TikTok business rights in the U.S. specified in the TikTok ban is most likely to be extended by 90 days," Trump told NBC.
"As much as a 90-day extension is appropriate, if we make that decision, we will announce it on Monday when the inauguration ceremony takes place," he added.
The move is interpreted as an indication that TikTok's "anti-TikTok law," which forces TikTok to sell its business rights in the U.S., will trigger a rule that allows it to extend the sale deadline by 90 days if significant progress is made regarding the sale. The 'TikTok Ban Act' of
includes a ban on new downloads of TikTok in the U.S. from 19th unless TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance sells TikTok's U.S. business rights to U.S. companies.
The law passed Congress in April last year and even ended its presidential signature amid bipartisan consensus that China could gather sensitive information from Americans or exert undue influence on public opinion through TikTok.
TikTok filed a lawsuit in court, but both the first and second trials ruled that there was no problem with the law, as national security concerns were justified.
TikTok has since filed a provisional injunction with the Supreme Court to urgently suspend the enforcement of the law, only to be dismissed.
Against this backdrop, TikTok said it plans to completely suspend services in the U.S. starting on the 19th when the ban takes effect.
However, the situation is changing as Trump, who had much fun reaching young voters through TikTok during the presidential election, is about to return to the White House.
Trump, who tried to ban TikTok during his first term in office, actively used it in last year's presidential election and turned against TikTok's removal, saying, "Banning TikTok would anger young people."
