Just before leaving office, U.S. President Joe Biden preemptively pardoned those likely to be retaliated by Trump.

President Biden said in a statement that he was granting preemptive pardons to Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and former Republican Liz Cheney.

The subjects of the pardon are those who have formed an angle with President-elect Trump or have taken the lead in criticism, and the pre-emptive pardon is intended to protect Trump from retaliatory investigations.

Fauci has been at odds with Trump over his response to COVID-19, while Cheney, who served as vice chairman of the 1.6 parliamentary riot special committee, endorsed Vice President Harris during the presidential election.

President Biden said in a statement that the United States always relies on dedicated and selfless officials and that those who served the country should not be subject to politically motivated prosecutions.
