High-concentration fine dust emergency reduction measures were imposed for the first time this winter in the Seoul metropolitan area and Chungnam region as smog was added to the dusty sky due to atmospheric congestion.

Air quality will continue to be bad until later this week, so special care is needed in health care.

I'm connecting with the reporter.

Reporter Jun-hyung Jeon, I think it's the worst smog this winter, but emergency reduction measures have been taken, right?

[Reporter]
Yes, high concentrations of fine dust have been rampant in most parts of the country for two days since yesterday.

For the first time this winter, "high-concentration fine dust emergency reduction measures" were imposed in the Seoul metropolitan area such as Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon, and preliminary reduction measures were issued in Chungbuk and Sejong.

'High concentration fine dust emergency reduction measures' are taken when the average concentration of ultrafine dust is expected to exceed 50μg (microgram) for two consecutive days on the same day and the next day.

The Midwest is more than four times higher than usual, with ultrafine dust concentrations exceeding 100 micrograms per hour.As emergency reduction measures for high concentrations of fine dust

are taken, public institutions will implement a two-day vehicle system from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the operation of class 5 vehicles will be restricted.

Air discharge businesses and construction sites are advised to shorten operating hours, and schools, kindergartens, and daycare centers are advised to close or shorten classes.

High concentrations of fine dust can enter deep into the bronchial tubes or lungs and cause symptoms such as coughing, phlegm, and runny nose, or worsen respiratory diseases.

Therefore, refrain from outdoor activities as much as possible, and wear a health mask when going out.

After returning home, you should wash your face and hands and feet thoroughly and take care of indoor air quality.

The National Institute of Environmental Research says smog from China is expected to flow in again tomorrow as fine dust continues to accumulate as the atmosphere stagnates.

As a result, air quality will continue to be poor until this Friday.

Experts predicted that fine dust would continue to build up in mild weather and then clear up this weekend as the cold air moves south this weekend when the Lunar New Year holiday begins.
