A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Tainan, a city in southern Taiwan.

Taiwan's Bureau of Meteorology said a 6.4 magnitude earthquake was observed in Tainan City (23.24 degrees north latitude, 120.51 degrees east longitude) at around 0:17 a.m. today, and the epicenter depth was 14 kilometers.

The China Earthquake Network reported a magnitude of 6.2, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 6.0.

Authorities in Taiwan say 27 people were rescued from a pile of collapsed buildings and taken to hospitals, with no deaths reported.

Workers were also evacuated from the TSMC plant, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, but no casualties were reported.

Chinese media said the tremors were also clearly felt in mainland China, including Xiamen and Fuzhou, which are close to the island of Taiwan.
