Russia and Ukraine exchanged drone attacks shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump took office.

Russian media Lenta reported on the 21st local time that Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks in six Russian states overnight, and that the attacks began two hours after President Trump took office.

Russia's Defense Ministry says it has shot down 55 drones in six provinces, including Rostov and Kursk, 22 of which were destroyed in the border province of Bryansk.

There were no casualties or physical damage, but airport operations in Kazan and Ulyanovsk were temporarily suspended.

Ukraine's air force also said Russia attacked with 131 drones and four missiles, explaining that 72 drones were shot down and 59 disappeared without reaching their target.

The attack also damaged some buildings in two Ukrainian states, but no casualties were reported, it added.

President Trump, who has previously vowed to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, is said to have ordered aides to schedule a call with Russian President Putin within days of taking office.
