The vaccine directly injects antigenic proteins made with genetic recombination technology into the body to induce the production of antibodies that remove viruses, and it was also approved for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a month ago.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said it quickly reviewed the request from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in accordance with the COVID-19 vaccination plan in winter this year and approved it for emergency use, increasing the number of vaccines available at the medical site to three.
The previously approved Pfizer and Moderna vaccines also respond to the "COVID-19 JN.1 mutation," but they contain messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), a step before synthesizing antigenic proteins that induce body immune responses.
