Last month, the triathlon, which was scheduled to be held in Samcheok, Gangwon-do, was canceled due to heavy rain.

Heavy rain was predicted a few days before the competition, but it was canceled only an hour and a half before the start of the day and the participation fee was not returned, raising opposition from participants.

The starting point and equipment replacement site were submerged in the river water already swollen by heavy rain two days before the competition.

On the same day, as concerns over safety accidents grew due to rain and wind, the competition was eventually canceled at around 6:30 a.m., an hour and a half before the start.

More than 600 participants gathered from all over the country.

The competition was not held, but the participation fee of 130,000 won was not returned because it was a natural disaster.

In response, the organizers explained that they tried to proceed with the competition as much as possible due to the possibility of changing the weather, but had to cancel it due to safety concerns.

He also added that it is difficult to refund the participation fee considering the cost of running the competition, such as labor and facility costs.

However, there are many sports competitions that return part of the participation fee or give you the right to participate in the next competition if you cancel due to a natural disaster.

[Shin Cheol-won / Head of the Consumer Sovereignty Citizens' Association: I think it's right to cancel it in advance or postpone the competition to provide an opportunity to participate at that time.]

This year marks the 13th edition of the Lee Sa-bu's Grandman Triathlon Championship.

Despite the anticipated downpours, the belated cancellation controversy and inexperienced post-mortem have significantly shaken confidence in the tournament's operation.
