The greatest risk of electric vehicle fires is the so-called 'heat runaway' phenomenon.

This is because it is not easy to extinguish the fire because it generates a fever of more than 1,000 degrees in a short time and is easy to recur.

A fire station in the Ulsan area actually held a demonstration to actually start a fire in an electric car and extinguish it directly.

JCN Ulsan Central Broadcasting Station reporter Jeon Dong-hun visited.

The electric car starts to smoke, and in an instant, flames soar out of the window.

The firefighters put out the fire by spraying water with fire hoses and installing equipment to spray water under the vehicle, but it is not enough.

Only after the suffocation fire extinguishing cover was installed to help fight the fire by blocking the inflow of oxygen, the flame began to die.

[Jo Jae-sung / Ulsan Northern Fire Station Songjeong119 Safety Center: If it was a normal fire, it would have been fully extinguished with the quantity we prepared today, but in the case of electric car fires, there may be a recurrence, so with the quantity we prepared today....]

Recently, due to a series of electric vehicle fire accidents in various parts of the country, the actual fire demonstration was held, and the newly introduced electric vehicle fire suppression equipment also appeared.

EV-drillance, which creates holes in the lower part of the car and cools it by spraying water inside the battery pack, and a portable container tank used to move the initially suppressed electric vehicle to a safe place.

More than 20 minutes after the fire started, the electric car completed its initial suppression and went into a mobile container-type tank.

With the introduction of new equipment, the fire can be extinguished faster than the existing electric vehicle fire suppression method.

[Sung Hye-sung / Fire Chief of 119 Disaster Response Division, Ulsan Northern Fire Station: It used to take a long time because it was impossible to directly hit the battery, but through the EV-drillance and mobile container water tank introduced, it takes as early as 10 minutes, or even 15 to 30 minutes even if it takes a little longer..]

From 2020 to the 6th, there were a total of 101 electric vehicle fire accidents in Ulsan.

There are double-digit fires every year.

The Ulsan Fire Department will introduce six more EV-drillans next year.
