The work to improve motorcycle license plates, which was pushed to eradicate the constant problems of some motorcyclists, including reckless driving and violations of laws, has been outlined.

The front license plate, which was discussed as a solution, was abandoned for now, and instead, it was decided to increase the discrimination of the rear license plate.

Reporter Kim Ki-bong covered it exclusively.

Motorcycles running around between cars or on the shoulder, ignoring the signal and threatening pedestrians!

[Hwang Hye-yeon / Yangcheon-gu, Seoul: They can pass by, and we are surprised.]

[Shim Doheon / Mapo-gu, Seoul: There are a lot of motorcycles that don't protect the signal, especially young people and delivery drivers....]

Traffic problems caused by motorcycles are increasing day by day.

According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for four years since 2018, the number of registered motorcycles has decreased by 0.1% per year, but the number of traffic accidents has increased by 1.3% per year, casualties by 2.8% and violations of laws by 9.2%.

A long-standing government-level review of the effective crackdown and prevention of illegal motorcycle operations has ended.

What drew the most attention was the front license plate reviewed for car-like crackdowns.

However, it seems difficult to implement a plan to attach a license plate to the front of a motorcycle.

This is because some difficult issues, such as safety and effectiveness, have been raised.

It was not easy to attach a license plate holder to the front, and there was a great concern that the license plate could be a fatal weapon in the event of an accident.

Above all, the decisive problem is that even if the license plate is installed, it cannot be recognized with the current traffic control camera.

Therefore, we decided to replace it with a symbolic front sticker, not a license plate, and instead increase the discrimination of the rear license plate.

After reviewing several candidates, we decided to increase the height of the license plate from the current 115mm to 150mm, simplify it to a national number system, and increase the font size in bold and large.

The problem is that there is a lack of rear-end cameras capable of rear-end photography.

[Son Myung-soo / National Assembly member of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee: We believe that this policy can be effective only when rear-end cameras are installed in alleys and crosswalks where motorcycle accidents occur frequently]

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to legislate a revision to improve rear license plates within this month, promulgated in February next year, and implemented in March next year, but it remains to be seen how much the motorcycle traffic culture will improve.
