Lawmakers involved in Japan's Liberal Democratic Party's so-called "secret fund scandal" failed in the House of Representatives election held yesterday (27th).

According to NHK's interim tally based on exit surveys and vote counting as of 4 a.m. this morning, 28 lawmakers, or 62%, were classified as losers out of 46 lawmakers involved in the slush fund scandal.

The losers included leading politicians such as Hakubun Shimomura and Ryota Takeda.

However, 18 people, including former Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno and former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura, were divided into elected candidates.

As a result, the Liberal Democratic Party's crushing defeat in the general election for the first time in 15 years is attributed to public judgment over the "secret fund scandal."

The slush fund scandal is suspected of creating slush funds by hosting political fundraisers and handing back the excess money to lawmakers who sold "party rights" over quotas.

In April, the Liberal Democratic Party self-disciplined most of the former Abe faction's implicated lawmakers.
