The Economic, Social and Labor Commission, a presidential social dialogue body, has announced its goal of reaching an agreement on the issue of continuing employment for the elderly, including extending the retirement age, by early next year.

Kwon Ki-sup, chairman of the Economic, Social and Labor Council, told reporters today that the issue of continuing employment of the elderly and extending the retirement age should be discussed first because of the interest and expectation of many people.

He explained that the two sides have not narrowed or agreed to the difference between labor and management, and that he should first work to form a public consensus through public debate and approach opinions again.

He added that the primary goal is to reach a conclusion by at least the first quarter of next year at a time when the Continuing Employment Committee has tentatively decided to hold a related debate on the 12th of next month for public discussion.

Regarding continued employment, he said that in order to increase job security, we need to endure wage flexibility, and that we will have to wait and see how and where we will organize the issue.

At the same time, Chairman Kwon also stressed that if the management community has focused on securing flexibility and stability, discussions on the concept of labor-friendly flexibility are needed in the future.
