On the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones 30 Industrial Average closed at 42,233.05, down 154.52 points or 0.36% from the previous session.
The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 rose 9.40 points or 0.16% from the previous session to 5,832.92 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 145.56 points or 0.78% from the previous session to 18,712.75.
The Nasdaq Composite broke its all-time high for the first time in two trading days and even set a new closing record for the first time in more than three months.
Market participants noted new indicators that will affect the extent of the Federal Reserve's November rate cut, as well as corporate earnings reports from Google parent Alphabet.
