Supercomputers are used in a variety of high-tech science fields such as space, aviation, and bio, as well as precise chemical analysis.

Korean researchers have developed the first 'accelerator chip' that corresponds to the head of a supercomputer in Korea, further advancing the possibility of localization of supercomputers.

Reporter Lim Null-sol reports.

A cluster of galaxies that emit various lights such as red and blue.

This is the new universe that the supercomputer has identified through simulation.

In addition, it can be used in a variety of ways, such as quickly and accurately analyzing the human genome, analyzing drug responses, and suggesting customized drugs.

Supercomputers are increasingly used to solve problems and analyze data that are difficult for humans to calculate, such as space science and climate change prediction.

Korean researchers have succeeded in localizing core component accelerator chips that allow the calculation of supercomputers to be fast and precise.

The accelerator chip developed is slightly larger than a business card and has the performance of 8TF (teraflops), which operates up to 8 trillion times per second.

It can be calculated 1 trillion times more per second than the existing supercomputer accelerator chips commercialized in the same process, which is the same performance as running 34 PC accelerator chips for games at once.

In addition, it can be calculated up to 52nd digits below the decimal point, enabling accurate scientific operations or precise simulations.

[Han Woo-jong / ETRI Supercomputing Systems Laboratory Researcher: Developed an accelerator capable of performing 16 teraflops per node (for verification purposes) and provided an opportunity to secure technological sovereignty in the core infrastructure through the development of these chips.]

Currently, only four countries, including the United States and China, produce supercomputers, and it has been difficult to produce themselves due to lack of manpower and environment.

The researchers explained that the development of the accelerator chip has laid the foundation for the world's fifth self-production of supercomputers as well as reducing dependence on foreign countries.

[Yeo Jun-ki / Director of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) Super Large AI Semiconductor Laboratory: It can be used as a computing node for supercomputers. And it can be said that it is a technology that can be used in many servers in the data center. (Also, Korea will be able to stand in the ranks of developing its own supercomputer.)

The researchers will showcase the accelerator chip developed at the world's largest supercomputing technology exhibition in mid-November.

In addition, in the first half of next year, we plan to integrate actual high-performance computing servers and software to continue the demonstration.
