Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said North Korea's projectile toward the East Sea at around 7:11 a.m. yesterday was an ICBM-class ballistic missile with a maximum altitude of 7,000 kilometers.
He also explained that the projectile flew 86 minutes, the longest ever, and the highest altitude.
The Japanese government also explained that after North Korea fired its ballistic missile at a high angle, it fell 200 kilometers west of Okushiri Island in Hokkaido and outside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) at 8:37 a.m.
"Considering the flying distance and altitude, it seems that the range may exceed 15,000 kilometers depending on the warhead weight," Hayashi said at an afternoon press conference.
If the range of North Korea's ballistic missiles is more than 15,000 kilometers, it is a distance that can strike all over the US mainland.
"This launch is a riot that raises tensions in the international community," Hayashi said. "It cannot be tolerated as a threat to peace and security in the region and the international community."
He then explained that he is working closely with South Korea and the United States to analyze the information.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said North Korea fired ballistic missiles and said there was no damage information.
At the same time, he ordered the prompt provision of information to the people and thorough safety checks.
