A U.S. plane was shot in Haiti, a Caribbean island country that is virtually anarchic due to gang violence, urgently redirecting its route to a neighboring country.

Earlier today, a U.S. Spirit Airlines plane was shot over Haiti as it left Florida for Port France, the capital of Haiti.

The plane diverted to neighboring Dominican Republic and landed in the Santiago area, with one crew member injured after being hit by a bullet.

It is not yet known who was responsible, and Haiti's Toussaint-Loubertur International Airport has temporarily suspended operations.

Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere and plagued by poverty and natural disasters for decades, has been effectively anarchic as gang violence has become commonplace since the killing of President Jovnel Moise in 2021.
